The novel Titser (1995) by Liwayway Arceo tells the love story of Amelita and Mauro set in the 90’s during a time when women were still gravely subjected to sexism in society. However, the novel provides us an example as to how women can make decisions on their own and not rely on their male counterparts. The novel guided us through the story of Amelita and her struggles as a female teacher that didn’t necessarily have that much income to support her family. Instead of taking the easy way out by marrying into a rich man’s family, she decided to marry the love of her life, Mauro, even though he didn’t have much to offer as a teacher himself. Throughout the novel, we see Amelita making decisions that any normal female at that time would not have been able to do. The novel provides a lot of strong female characters with which women til today can relate themselves to.
